Give Kids a Smile

Dental disease affects 50% of first graders, making it the most prevalent chronic childhood disease. The American Dental Association and the Minnesota Dental Association began the program Give Kids a Smile in 2003 as a means to provide dental services for underserved children. Dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and other team members volunteer their time and services to provide screenings, dental cleanings, education, and treatment to children. Each year, approximately 350,000 children benefit from approximately 1,500 events around the country.

The event falls on the first weekend in February and is Friday, February 6th and Saturday, February 7th. The Minnesota Dental Association anticipates that approximately 200 locations will provide free dental care to about 6,000 children. According to the MDA website "Since Give Kids a Smile began, Minnesota dentists have provided free care to more than 60,000 young children and donated services valued at more than $15 million dollars."

Bassett Creek Dental will be a host site for the 12th year on Saturday, February 7th. Instead of being open for our regular Saturday schedule, the office will be overflowing with volunteers, and smiling children. Families call the office to schedule appointments for the event. The dentists and team members at Bassett Creek Dental look forward each year to this rewarding event.

Bassett Creek Dental’s Dr. Todd Tsuchiya talked with KARE 11 News about this exciting program.

Minnesota dentists statewide will be serving their communities this weekend. If you are interested in making an appointment, call United Way by dialing 2-1-1, or visit When you schedule an appointment, you will be matched with a clinic to best meet your needs – from cleanings and exams to fillings and comprehensive care, Minnesota dentists will be doing their best to help serve the underserved and care for our children in need.

There are three requirements to take advantage of this outreach program: the potential patient must be 18 years old or younger, accompanied by a parent or guardian, and have an appointment. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate walk-ins. There are still appointments available, so call United Way or visit to join us this weekend, and Give Kids a Smile!
