Dental Implants May Be a Better Option than a Bridge

Tooth Replacement

Whether you’ve lost your tooth from a sports accident or another reason, you probably want to have it replaced as soon as possible. You have several options to replace missing teeth. You can have a dental bridge made that literally bridges, or spans the gap with a pontic, or a false tooth, to replace the missing tooth. Or you can have a dental implant procedure to replace the tooth.

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically implanted into the jaw. The jaw bone and gums grow around the implant, anchoring it firmly into the jaw like the roots of your tooth. A dental crown is then placed over the top to mimic the appearance of a real tooth. The resulting tooth looks, feels and acts like a natural one.

There are several reasons why dentists recommend dental implants rather than bridges:

- Implants preserve your bone structure better than bridges.

- Bridges must be fitted to the two teeth on either side of the bridge itself, which requires shaping and crowning the teeth. This further changes healthy teeth to replace a missing tooth. Dental implants do not affect the surrounding teeth.

- Implants look more natural. That may be important for teeth that are visible when you smile, chew or speak.
