Sports Mouth Guards Prevent Dental Trauma

Sports Mouthgaurds

The use of sports mouth guards can prevent serious dental pain and trauma in children and adults alike. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends custom-fitted sports mouth guards if your children participate in sports where the likelihood of dental trauma is high: soccer, football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, and other sports.

According to the AAPD, participation in sports of all kinds carries a risk of oral and facial trauma. A custom-fitted mouth guard can prevent serious injuries. The highest risk for injury occurs among young men ages 15 to 18, but anyone who participants in sports is at risk.

Custom-fitted mouth guards prevent injury by cushioning the mouth against a blow in which the teeth snap onto the soft tissue. They also stabilize the mouth, neck, and head to some degree. This can actually prevent serious brain injuries, too.

A study published in General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, reported that custom-fitted mouth guards provided better protection from traumatic injury than mouth guards purchased at sports stores.

Mouth guard thickness is also a factor in preventing injuries. Sports mouth guards custom-fitted by a dentist are generally 3.5 millimeters, while over-the-counter mouth guards are just 1.65 millimeters. The extra millimeters are worth it, considering the ramifications.

Custom-fitted sports mouth guards do cost more than those bought at your local sports store, but your childs health may be at risk. Dentists can sometimes leave room within a custom-fitted mouth guard to accommodate erupting teeth or to account for a childs growth. Ask your dentist about options to minimize the number of times a mouth guard must be replaced for growing children.

A custom mouth guard may seem like an investment, but when weighed against the potential of injury or even losing a tooth, its worth it.
