What to Expect During the Procedure for Dental Crowns

dental-crowns-bassett-creek-dental.jpgDental crowns are covers or caps placed over teeth to protect and restore them for cosmetic or health reasons. Crowns can be placed for many reasons. Some people get crowns to restore badly discolored or stained teeth. Others have a crown fitted to cover a broken tooth or to restore the appearance of their smile. Dentists may also recommend crowns to protect restored teeth or to prepare teeth for a bridge.

No matter what the reason, crowns are an important method of restoring teeth. Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials including resin, ceramic, porcelain and stainless steel. Your dentist will recommend the best one for your needs.

Dental Crown Procedures: Traditional Crowns

Traditional crowns take two office visits. At the first visit, the dentist numbs your tooth and the surrounding gums and restores the tooth, if necessary. A filling may be placed and the tooth is shaped for the crown. An impression is taken of the area so that the crown can be made to fit the exact shape of your tooth and bite. The dentist then places a temporary crown so that the area is covered until your new, permanent crown is ready.

When your permanent crown is ready, you return to the office. The dentist removes the temporary crown and places the permanent crown. Your new dental crown is then complete.

Dental Crowns: Same Day Cerec Crowns

Bassett Creek Dental also offers a wonderful service called Cerec, or same-day crowns. Cerec or same-day crowns can be made right in our office using Computer-Assisted Design Computer-Assisted Manufacture (CAD-CAM.) The dentist takes several pictures of your teeth and bite using an intraoral camera. Then the crown is milled by a computer to fit precisely. This eliminates the laboratory step in manufacturing the crown. The crown, inlay or onlay restoration is then made while you wait.  We can finish your crown all in one appointment.
