What You Need to Know about Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure these days, but what are wisdom teeth? And why might your dentist suggest having them removed? There are many reasons why these teeth can be problematic.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars to emerge on both the upper and lower jaw. A variety of clinical and radiographic (x-ray) techniques are available to image and assess the position of wisdom teeth and their proximity to other structures.

Even if your wisdom teeth aren’t a source of pain, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing wrong. The wisdom teeth could be stuck or impacted, which means they can’t break through your jaw and into your mouth as they should. Maybe your mouth is too small to accommodate the third molars, or the teeth could be growing at an angle  and pushing up against other teeth.

Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Extraction

There are many reasons why your dentist may recommend wisdom teeth extraction.

Damage to other teeth: Wisdom teeth can push against the teeth nearby, moving them out of alignment. This can cause discomfort and bite problems.

Jaw damage: Cysts can form around the new teeth. If they aren’t treated, they can create hollow spaces in the jaw. This can damage the nerves.

Sinus issues: Wisdom teeth problems can cause sinus pain, congestion, and pressure.

Inflamed gums: The tissues around wisdom teeth can swell. It can be difficult to keep the area clean because of inflamed gums.

Cavities: Swollen gums can make wisdom teeth hard to keep clean. Because wisdom teeth are the third molars and far back in the jaw, they can also be difficult to brush and floss.

Alignment: Impacted wisdom teeth can undo the effects of braces, bridges, crowns, and other types of dental work.

Your dentist will look at the x-rays of your jaw, the shape of your mouth, and the position of your teeth to make a recommendation about wisdom teeth removal. Timing is also important. It’s better to have your wisdom teeth removed when you are young rather than waiting until periodontal disease begins. As people age, the effects of retained or impacted wisdom teeth can be more serious. Periodontal disease and the prevalence of cavities worsens in the presence of third molars.
