Patients often describe toothache pain as sharp and stabbing, a dull ache, or pain after they eat cold or hot foods. Each of these sensations provides important information to your dentist to help pinpoint the cause of the toothache.

Causes of a Toothache

There are many causes of a toothache. A cavity is just one possible cause. Some of the possible reasons (but not all) include:

  • Worn spots on the dental enamel, which can cause sensitive teeth.

  • Dental cavity.

  • Broken or missing fillings.

  • Infection.

  • Temporomandibular disorders.
