What Are Some of the Possible Causes of a Toothache?

Final_Sized.jpg

Even if you see your dentist at Bassett Creek Dental regularly, there may come a day when you feel that twinge that tells you that you have a toothache. A toothache may be caused by many things, so it’s important for you to make an appointment and have the tooth examined by one of our dentists. It could be something very simple, or it could be something that requires immediate attention. If you’re in discomfort, don’t wait - toothaches rarely go away on their own, and we can help you feel comfortable again much faster.

Symptoms of a Toothache

Toothaches can feel different to each person. The type of discomfort you’re experiencing may also be a clue as to what’s happening inside your teeth and jaw that’s causing the toothache. Patients often describe toothache pain as sharp and stabbing, a dull ache, or pain after they eat cold or hot foods. Each of these sensations provides important information to your dentist to help pinpoint the cause of the toothache.

Causes of a Toothache

There are many causes of a toothache. A cavity is just one possible cause. Some of the possible reasons (but not all) include:

  • Worn spots on the dental enamel, which can cause sensitive teeth.

  • Dental cavity.

  • Broken or missing fillings.

  • Infection.

  • Temporomandibular disorders.

Don’t try to self-diagnose the source of your discomfort. Let your dentist examine your teeth and gums and take X-rays to find the reason for your toothache. Soon you’ll feel fine again.
