Winter Activities to Keep Your Family Active

As the temperatures drop and the snow flies it is far too tempting to go into hibernation mode by getting comfy on the couch and preparing to spend the next few months indoors and inactive. The weather is no excuse for inactivity! It just takes a little creative out of the box thinking to keep you and your family moving this winter!

Why Activity is Important

Keeping your entire family moving this winter should be at the top of your priority list. Physical activity has been linked to some powerful data on the positive effects on your health:

  • Helps to treat/combat anxiety and depression
  • Gives you more energy
  • Decreases your chance of becoming ill
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Helps control weight
  • Prevention of many serious illnesses

These are just a few of the ways physical activity can play a big role in your overall health, but the data is truly endless on the positive effects movement has on living the fullest life!

Winter Activities to Keep Your Family Active

In general, adults should aim for 150 minutes of physical activity weekly and children should be getting at least 60 minutes of vigorous activity daily. Yes, we know the winter months can make this a bit more challenging due to the plummeting temperatures, so here are a few activities to consider:

Head to the Park

If the temperatures allow for it, bundle the family up and head to your local park. Let the kiddos run wild while Mom and Dad walk laps or join in on the playground fun!

Take a Walk/Jog/Run

Take advantage of those days above freezing temperatures by bundling the family up and heading outdoors for a walk/jog/run. Thinking about taking a walk to head to the local park/playground.

After School Activities

Encourage your children to stay active by enrolling them in an after school activity they enjoy and will help them to get their daily movement. Check with their school and local facilities for programs your child might enjoy.

Fitness Center

Many fitness centers now offer childcare while mom and dad get their workout in. You can, therefore, get your sweat session in while your children enjoy running and playing with other children.

Get Creative and Think Outside the Box

These are just a few ways to get your family moving, but get creative and think outside the box! Think about indoor trampoline parks, Ninja Warrior Studios, and so much more! Whatever you do just keep moving!
